At the Pony Orphanage, the mischievous white Candy was raised by Mrs. Pony and Sister Lein. Her best friend Anny suddenly decided to stop being friends with her after being adopted by the Brightons. In the midst of her sadness of losing her best friend, Candy encountered a mysterious young man to whom she only knows as her "prince". He then disappeared, leaving only a golden brooch lying on the ground. The brooch then became Candy's most treasured memorabilia, with the memory of the "prince" in her heart forever.

Not long afterwards, Candy was adopted by the wealthy Legans, but as a "hired companion" to the Legan children, the spoilt and evil siblings: Neil and Eliza. It was there that Candy met Anthony, who resembled very much of Candy's "prince", the vain Archie, and the boy genius, Stea. These three fine young men became Candy's best friends in happiness and sadness.

Candy ran away from the Legans, fed up from being mistreated so often by Neil and Eliza. She had intended to return to her home, the Pony House, but the little boat that she took at the river fell to a waterfall. Candy was saved by a strange man named Albert. After she recovered, she returned to the Legans.
