A 4-years-old? Going to school 8-2pm EVERY day?

January 23rd, 2012

I remember having that kind of question in the past. “A 4-years-old? Going to school 8-2pm EVERY day? It’s my schedule when I was at HIGH SCHOOL!”

Moving to another country, loosing the old support system I previously had, I have to admit that I’m changed.

What I really appreciate being here, apart from my old community, is meeting another people with different kind of thoughts. Different kind of point of view. I’m not the person here to say which is the right or the wrong one, I just want to share what I see and what I think. If the other person think differently; go ahead, “There is always a different story in every parenting style – theurbanmama.com”. You don’t have to agree with me, and at the same time you don’t have to change me and the way I’m thinking (and choose!).

I used to have a thought: a 4-years-old going to the school for more than 3 hours a day is something inappropriate. Especially every day! There must be something wrong about that (or the parents! Haha). Poor kids! Then I have to face the fact that I have to do everything alone here. I had a maid in the past, so I don’t need to deal with all the household and “remeh-temeh” things. She will do *almost* everything, just like a typical maid in Indonesia. She will do the house-cleaning, she will do the ironing, helping me with my daughter’s routine if I had something else to do, cooking and so on. Here? I have to do everything on my own. With my job (although I’m working-from-home), and with my passion to do anything else other than parenting; having a 4-years-old kid around for the whole day is just impossible.

Again, every person is different. I don’t think Martha Stewart will see that as a problem :)

More than the fact that most international schools here have similar school time; 8am – (around) 2 pm every day, it’s also a matter of choice.

I have to admit that I’m not that fantastic mom whose a big passion in assisting their kids 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. I’m not into homeschooling. Honestly :) And I’m glad that finally I meet some moms who don’t mind saying the same things. Is it something about pride here? I found it’s a little bit “taboo” to say things like that before. Every mom is much more appreciated when they can say “I will teach my kid by myself. I won’t let the school be responsible for my kids’ education.” Don’t take me wrong, I also believe that parents should be responsible, but sharing the job with another party will be great. Especially because I’m not the expert. I just use my instinct, which I found not always the best thing.

So, it’s my choice. And I’m glad with that, especially when my second will be born in these next 2 months. Can’t imagine how to juggle things around if I made a different choice! :)
